Built over 50 years ago, this home became the HQ for the Syrian military from 1975 to 2005.
First built over 50 years ago, in 1975, during the Lebanese war, this historical home was appropriated by the Syrian military intelligence, and remained their headquarters until 2005.
But after 50 years away from it, the family's grandson has finally returned to recover his family home.
The family wished to retain the history of the home, but also reinvent it, creating a memorial to remember the sacrifices of war.
Nabil Gholam Architects took great care when renovating the residence, to ensure that the features of the old mansion remained, but that they were also able to ad new modern elements to the structure to bring fresh meaning and purpose to the property.
“The challenge in this project was how to keep this iconic element of the Lebanese war and give it a completely new image, based on the respect of nature and on learning from its environment,” wrote the architects.
We think they have struck the balance just right.
