The area’s recent facelift is ensuring this former sleepy resort town is fast becoming one of the most sought after locations in Fethiye.
Having green space on your doorstep boosts property prices, and the charming seaside resort of Calis now houses one of the most spectacular seafront public parks along the Turquoise coast. The area’s recent facelift, alongside a wave of new facilities including Şehit Fethi Bey Park, is ensuring this former sleepy resort town is fast becoming one of the most sought-after locations in Fethiye.
About Calis
Calis, also known as 'Calis Beach', is situated a 35 minute transfer (45km) from Dalaman International Airport and just a 10-minute taxi ride from the harbour town of Fethiye. Known for its 4km stretch of beach and glorious sunsets across the bay and its central islands, it has been a popular tourist resort with Brits and Europeans since the mid-nineties.
Unlike many of its neighbouring resort towns, Calis lies at sea level– it's flat. This means it's extremely easy to navigate, no mountain goat antics necessary and you can swap the need for a car for a leisurely stroll or a push bike. It's the ideal location for those with mobility issues or looking to retire in Turkey. There's a well-established expat community, a year round social scene and a great selection of hotels, restaurants and shops to keep the whole family entertained. Calis has a modern state hospital right on the sea front, a good selection of public and private schools, no-end of supermarkets, and a weekly Sunday market ideal to stock up on fresh veggies and the odd 'genuine fake' handbag or sweatshirt.
Şehit Fethi Bey Park
Those familiar with Fethiye will no-doubt have visited the seafront promenade now nicknamed 'millionaires’ row'. This wide walkway, lined with date palms, fancy restaurants, outdoor play-parks and gymnasiums, stretches all the way from central Fethiye to the nature reserve and bird sanctuary in Calis. It was a huge project and has taken years to reach the final stages. The opening of Şehit Fethi Bey Park last month was the culmination of almost 10 years of hard work and planning.
Şehit Fethi Bey Park is built on a huge 68,000m2 plot of reclaimed wasteland. The local municipality had promised open-air libraries, windmills, sculptures, play-parks and walkways - they certainly didn't disappoint. The park, the largest in the Mugla region, is situated opposite the Devlet Hastanesi (state hospital) and looks out over the bay towards Sovalye (Knights) Island. A range of available seating, hammocks and green spaces make ideal spots for relaxing and soaking up the glorious views. There's a constant sea breeze that's so welcomed during the long sunny days, windmills and waterwheels all set in beautifully planted and scented gardens. Drainage canals have been cleverly dressed up with rope bridges and rockeries, and the bright blue cycle lane running all the way from Fethiye runs straight through the centre.
Perhaps the main highlight of the park are the activities, for kids, it's a dream! Colossal swings and climbing frames with cargo nets and zip lines, a skate park, basketball court and open-air gymnasium are just a few of the main attractions. Then there's the sculptures; contemporary fish, white galloping horses, bees and Disney characters all strategically placed throughout the grounds. The statue of the pilot Fethi Bey, whom the town and attraction are named after, is now re-homed and takes a central position in the park.
Fethiye has undergone significant modernisation over the last 10 years and the value of property in Calis and central Fethiye has risen considerably as a result. Calis is an attractive location for those seeking a lifestyle property and prices are affordable - you can own an apartment in Calis for less than £65,000.
