Expansion plans include an airport, seaport, residential areas, malls, schools, health, agricultural and industrial facilities for Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
Features of plans for a "giant extension" to the holy city of Mecca have been revealed by Prince Khalid Al-Faisal bin Abdulaziz, governor of the Mecca Region.
The project, styled as 'Al-Faisaliya', will include a governmental complex, including the Governorate of Mecca Region, a centre for all Islamic organisations and foundations, a research centre, airport and seaport, Construction Week Online reported.
Malls, residential areas, and entertainment, educational, health, agricultural, and industrial facilities, will also be included in the development.
Addressing reporters, Prince Abdulaziz said the recently launched project is a will be to the west of the city and will be a "giant extension of the Holy City of Mecca [rather] than a new city".
Local daily Saudi Gazette reported that Mecca Region Development Authority will supervise the project, which will provide one million jobs across different sectors and is expected to accommodate 6.5 million people by 2050.
