Global Architectural Development has created a community built with local materials which merges living and green spaces in Turkey.
Antalya, with 2 million permanent residents and over 10 million tourists, represents a great diversity of cultures and backgrounds. Days in Antalya are pleasant, relaxed, and full of warmth and the aroma of citrus. With the downtown area increasingly becoming busy, and many homes being converted to hotels, there are many looking for a community offering both a strong sense of togetherness and tranquillity.
To help fill this void, GAD (Global Architectural Development) has designed a residential development in Antalya with four large, twenty-two medium, and twelve small residential units. They are all linked to public transport via specially designed underground connections. Built on sustainable principles, each unit was created using only locally available materials, low waste and low pollution. Each unit has a north-south orientation which maximizes the use of sunlight and is fitted with photo-voltaic panels to produce energy. Carefully positioned openings take advantage of the natural daylight, increasing privacy and adding cross-ventilation and a reduction in energy consumption levels. The form and exterior timber cladding acts as a shell that regulates climatic conditions, defines the boundaries of each unit and improves the interior lighting.
The project combines modern living with nature, where gardens and green spaces merge into the living environment. This is particularly evident in the living room where the large windows look over the patio and infinity edge pool. The water with its reflective properties aids the sense of a continuation of space. At the southern façade of each unit, a greenhouse has been included to provide a sheltered outside space which can be used as a conservatory in the winter months or as a greenhouse in the summer.
In keeping with the sustainable theme, instead of manicured gardens, native plant species have been used such as the Turkish Pine and Oak and native species of grass and aquatic plants to promote the natural species diversity and ecology. The banks of the river include a tiered dock to allow amphibious species access to and from the water, as well as being able to deal with fluctuations of the river water level. Bee farms have also been included in the landscape design.
The interdependent villas create relationships between occupants with each villa having free circulation around it encouraging them to bond and interact with each other. Residents of the AHK KNDU villas can venture out and have a picnic near one of the waterside communal spaces or use the adjacent Aksu River to make their way to the upcoming Beachside Social Club, located directly on the Mediterranean waterfront.
GAD has received multiple awards for AHK KNDU villas, including the 2016 The Plan Awards, honourable mention, The 2015 Sign of the City Awards Premium Project, the Greenest Building Under Construction and the 2015 European Property Awards Residential Development for Turkey.
