MVRDV and Dewan Architects + Engineers have created a new residential development set over seven slim towers in Abu Dhabi.
Positioning itself as the new heart of Abu Dhabi, Makers District is a large-scale district level development by RNL design. This will also be home to Pixel, the new residential development which includes retail, office and community spaces. There will be 480 apartments with a variety of sizes and configurations, from studio apartments to penthouses. As its name suggests, the structure of each building appears to take the form of a series of pixels that step back as they ascend from the plaza.

Co-Architects MVRDV and Dewan Architects + Engineers have positioned the seven slim towers that make up the development to afford the best views of the city. The grounds for the towers will be fully open to pedestrians and will feature gardens and access to the adjacent beach, marina and a new public event place, “The Artery,” designed by the Danish firm, Bjarke Ingels Group: BIG. Located on Al Reem Island, the community will be across from Saadiyat Island, the new cultural hub and home to the recently opened Louvre Abu Dhabi.
The architects have designed the building to have a ‘sober’ solid design, using rough, patterned concrete contrasting with refined, smooth finishes. They will also be working with artists to create the facade ceramics in various shades, patterns and as the final touch to the project.
Completion of Pixel is set for 2020.
