Morocco has announced that it will upgrade the old medinas of Marrakech, Essaouira, Sale, Meknes and Tetouan.
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has chaired a signing ceremony focused on the sustainable restoration of Morocco’s medinas (walled cities).
At the beginning of the ceremony, Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit gave a speech in which he underlined that the upgrading program of the old medina of Marrakech (to take place from 2018 to 2022), whose partnership and financing agreement was signed in May 2018, is worth 484 million dirhams, out of which 150 millions is a contribution from the Hassan II Fund for economic and social development, said the Moroccan government website.

The restoration programs aim to preserve Morocco’s architectural heritage and to honour Morocco’s cultural wealth, and to promote some of Morocco’s more popular tourism destinations including Sale which is near Rabat, Meknes which is located near Fez, Tetouan, Marrakech, and the coastal city of Essaouira.
Each city will receive a portion of the budget; Sale will receive MAD 900 million, Meknes will receive MAD 800 million, Tetouan will receive MAD 350 million, Essaouira will receive MAD 300 million, and Marrakech MAD 484 million.
The project is the result of a partnership between the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, the National Initiative for Human Development, the Housing Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, the State Secretariat for Vocational Training, the Marrakech Communal Council, the Marrakech Urban Agency and the Al-Omrane Holding.
