BIG's submission into world wide competition has been selected for their design for one of three Expo pavilions
As part of Expo 2020's theme of Connecting Minds and Creating the Future, three pavilions have been decided upon for the sub themes of Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability.
Thirteen of the world's most respected architectural firms submitted designs in a world wide competition launched by Emaar Properties, with BIG's submission winning the design for the Opportunity pavilion.
In a statement, BIG has said "By merging the maximum roof surface and allowable building height with the minimum footprint at ground level, the Pavilion creates the largest possible shading structure with the smallest possible volume". The space will be able to be used for both large and small, private and public events, with the plaza and internal oasis a symbol of the inherent opportunity of the Expo- to bring people together, connecting minds and creating the future.
BIG, Bjarke Ingels Group, is a Copenhagen and New York based group of architects, designers, builders, and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, interior design, landscape design, product design, research and development. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East.
Expo 2020 Dubai will be the first World Expo to take place in the Middle East, Africa or South Asia. A collective area of nearly 3.2 billion people, this will be the first Expo close to home for many people who have had not had easy access, making a lasting impact on the entire region.
