Smart home technology looks set to be integrated into new units as Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid and Dubai’s government project Dubai to become the smartest city by 2021.
An automated smart home is an integrated solution that has both the infrastructure and products connecting and controlling systems, devices and appliances relating to climate control, home entertainment, security and more. These are controlled by an internet-connected mobile device, a universal remote, or even by voice command.
Although retro-fitting and plug-in devices are available, plus lifestyle products such as Google Home and Amazon Echo, a proper system would be built in as part of the development plan.

Most high-rise residential buildings in the UAE have Building Management Systems (BMS) sensors and controls which monitor the building’s mechanical and electrical installations. But most units do not have smart technology installed.
With lower-priced units entering the Dubai property market, developers are balancing their budgets to help bring the cost down. Smart technology can be expensive and is sometimes viewed as a non-essential. But with the Dubai government’s aim to be a smarter and more sustainable Emirate, and developers’ goal to create projects with a point of difference, smart homes may rise in popularity.
Home automation company Ecobee has a thermostat product which controls heating and cooling systems remotely. They claim it has saved owners an average of 23% on heating and cooling costs.
Smart homes in the future will have systems able to communicate with each other. This will include air conditioning units connected with a weather forecast, which will be able to adjust the temperature according to the outside conditions. When there is a heat wave, for instance, it will adjust the interior temperature.
