'A House in Memory of Rostam' located in Karaj, Iran, designed to embrace the horse paddock views while retaining privacy, was designed by Iranian architects Sohrab Rafat Architecture.
Built in memory of the owner’s first horse, 'A House in Memory of Rostam' is situated in a very desirable area with great potential for riding and raising horses. Sohrab Rafat Architecture created this divine house with the large windows of the house looking directly out to the horse paddock.
The house was built following the design brief to create a sense of privacy and security. The living room and other public spaces are all located on the upper floor, so the natural surroundings and unobstructed views of the mountains are what you look out over. And because the bedrooms are on the lower floor, you can walk straight from the bedrooms to the pool.
Water from a spring on the northern and western sides of the lot, which swamped the land and drained away, is now been collected and filtrated to use in the house and in the garden.
Any leftover water is directed to lower level lands through two recently constructed qanats (underground waterways).
The clever design also separates the pool area and the service building by positioning them back to back, so any gardeners, plumbers, horse minders, or kitchen help will not interfere with the privacy of the villa.
The design is so exceptional, it has won multiple awards including: First place in Memar Awards, 2014, Iran; Entry to Venice Art Biennale for A House in Memory of Rostam project, 2015, Italy; and Semi-finalist in 2A Awards competition for A House in Memory of Rostam project, 2015, Turkey.
