Hayy: Creative Hub in Saudi Arabia designed by Dubai-based ibda design will act as an incubator for Saudi talent.
Art Jameel recently announced that construction has begun on a new development in Saudi Arabia, set to open in the spring of 2019. Named Hayy: Creative Hub – derived from the Arabic word for 'neighbourhood' – refers to the community-oriented nature of the complex and the ways in which the partner organisations are working together to present the diversity of the arts.
The three-story dynamic development, conceived by award-winning architects ibda design, will act as an incubator for Saudi talent. It will be the first bespoke home for the creative industries in Jeddah, bringing together Saudi Arabian artists, playwrights, photographers, filmmakers, entrepreneurs, and others, along with the enthusiastic audiences that support them.
Dubai based ibda design has created the space of Hayy: Creative Hub to feature open internal courtyards surrounded by shaded terraces and walkways. The art gallery exhibition space is centrally located within the project, working in co-existence with the museum's other services, including spaces for partner organisations, design galleries, performance and comedy clubs, cafes, an entrepreneurship incubator and digital studio for filmmakers, a theatre, and artists’ studios.
The connection between these services is established by the main central courtyard, which acts as the heart of the community. The exterior facade is specifically designed for the climate and culture of the home city, receiving natural light into the interior spaces while simultaneously maintaining the privacy of neighbouring buildings.
In 2018-2019, Art Jameel is set to open two new cultural centres: Hayy: Creative Hub, a major new complex for the creative industries in Saudi Arabia, and the Jameel Arts Centre, a contemporary arts institution in the UAE.
